The 2008 county convention is coming up. If you are interested in being an officer in 2008, please contact us soon. We could use some new people taking on officer chores. Time for some rotation in office...

Convention 2007

Our 2007 convention was held Monday, March 26, 7:00pm at El Chapala on Merrimon Ave. Our new officers are:

  • Bernard Carman, Chairman.
  • Robert Parker, Vice Chairman.
  • Will Baumeister, Secretary.
  • Daniel McCamish, Treasurer.
  • Leslee Kulba, Closet Wench (provides closet for storing our outreach materials).
  • Ron Leonard, Court Jester.
  • Carl Milsted, Jr., Web Dude.

For contact information for the new officers, click here. Note that some of the old email addresses have been turned off in order to foil spammers.

LP Buncombe has endorsed Tim Peck in his run for Asheville City Council.

In addition, delegates to the LPNC convention were selected. No bylaws changes were made. For minutes of the convention, see the Calendar pages.

Clark Walter
1916-2006

At an age when most people have decided to retire from the troubles of this world, Clark Walter vigorously led the charge for liberty here in Buncombe County. Over the past few years Clark had served as Treasurer, Vice Chair, Chair, and Public Relations Director of the Libertarian Party of Buncombe County. He appeared regularly on the editorial page of the Asheville Citizen-Times calling for an end to the income tax, the drug war, and government control of the schools. He had spoken before many local civic organizations and worked to organize many of our forums held at the Days Inn on Tunnel Road. He contacted many local religious leaders, warning them of the dangers of their special tax status, of how the IRS has robbed the churches of much of their moral authority.

Late last year age finally caught up with Clark, and his health began to fail him. Yet even in a weakened condition he maintained an air of dignity and good cheer. Clark passed away on January 26, 2006. He is greatly missed.

Merrimon Avenue Liberation Project

Some people believe that the government has the right to determine the look and feel of Merrimon Avenue. We wondered what the business and property owners along Merrimon Avenue thought of this bit of social engineering. Have a look at our questionnaire. If you own property or a business along Merrimon Avenue, please print out a copy, fill it out, and send it to us to let us know what you think.

Weekly Social at El Chapala

Every Monday night at 7:30, we have a social hour (or more...) at the El Chapala on Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville (behind the Steinmart).  We are usually at the first table you see as you come in.  Join us!  You don't have to be a Libertarian to enjoy good conversation along with good Mexican food at an affordable price.
